A cookie is a small file a website stores on your device so it can remember something useful, like the fact that you are already signed in. We also use two close cousins, local storage and session storage, which work the same way from your point of view. When we say cookies on this page, we mean all three.
These keep the basics working, so they are always on. They remember your sign in session so you do not have to log in on every page, protect forms against cross site request forgery, keep our servers balanced, and help us spot abuse or a sign in attempt that does not look like you. Without these, HiNeighbor cannot keep you signed in safely.
These remember the small choices that make the app yours: your neighborhood view, how you like the map zoomed, whether Hank speaks out loud, and which reminders you have already read. They are convenience only, and clearing them just resets those choices to their friendly defaults.
If you accept them, we count things like which pages neighbors visit and where something broke, so we can fix rough edges. These are aggregated and de identified, we do not use them to build a profile of you, and nothing about them is sold or shared with advertisers. If you decline, we simply do not set them.
We do not run ad network pixels, retargeting tags, or cross site tracking on HiNeighbor. If we ever add sponsored content from a local business, it will be labeled clearly and it will not follow you around the internet. Any change here would be posted on this page before it happened.
A few trusted providers set cookies while they do a job for us: our sign in and database provider keeps the session token, our map tiles provider may cache tiles for speed, and our error reporting tool records a short lived identifier so a crash can be traced. They may only use what they collect to provide their service to us.
Session cookies disappear when you close your browser. Your sign in cookie lasts until it expires or you sign out, usually within a few weeks. Preference and analytics cookies last up to twelve months, then they are set again the next time you visit if you still agree.
You can accept or decline the optional cookies when we ask, and change that decision any time from your privacy settings. Your browser can also block or clear cookies for hineighbor.ai, though blocking the essential ones will sign you out. We honor Global Privacy Control signals, so if your browser sends one, we treat it as a no to optional analytics.
If we add or remove a cookie category we will update this page and the date at the top. If anything here is unclear, email support@hineighbor.ai and a real neighbor will write back. You can also read our Privacy Policy and our Community Guidelines.
